Don’t we just love football referees? They are like heavenly creatures. Unlike players and managers, they commit no sin. They change the fortune of teams just as God controls fate, and make the right decisions based on their own consciences just as Job did (and eat a lot of curry in the case of Alan Wiley). Without such divine figures, the beautiful game is beautiful no more. Without them, football will be like stale water in a pond; unexciting and full of algae.
Oh Fergie why have you forsaken Alan? Just because he eats like a pig, gluttony is no sin - am I not correct? Although Alan is heavenly you cannot expect him to spread his wings like an angel and fly across the pitch! And Willie, how can you accuse Steve Nicholls just as Herod did to John the Baptist? You either sin and go to hell or not sin and go to heaven. Referees’ judgements are always right.
Referees have the ability to see from the heavens whether or not the ball has crossed the line. They give sinners more than a second chance (Graham Poll, “cough cough”), and rid the football field of violent and non violent evil spirits. What more can we ask of them? Surely they have done no wrong to deserve such condemnation and hatred in the past few weeks. We should love and embrace them like the way God loves and embraces his followers.
