So let’s face it - not all gay people appreciate Britney or Christina. There, I said it. For some people it's hard enough integrating into the village without having to feel bad about not knowing the words to every pop ballad dance remix. Personally, I find the prolonging of a song with that seemly endless, incessant crescendoing beat just frustrates people further, but that's just me. For a few months you can down your drinks and attempt to manoeuvre your hips, forced to tolerate and sometimes stomach the abundance of cheese that seeps out along the canal. But there eventually comes a point where 'it's alright to get drunk and dance to' becomes difficult to sustain.
Don't get me wrong, I have spent many a night dancing to Girl's Aloud in Poptastic and biding my time in anticipation of the X Factor every Saturday as much as the next person, but I was never fully satisfied. Like most, I go to Canal Street for the buzzing atmosphere and friendly people. As previously mentioned, for those who have a slightly more, shall we say, eclectic taste, alternative music isn't easily found unless you know where to look and when. At weekends Canal gets alternative.
Stumble downstairs into Baa Bar you are likely to hear the likes of Placebo, Rage against the Machine and the Distillers. Head to Mantos 3rd floor Lounge from 9pm on a Friday for INDIElicious, free entry where everything from MGMT to Bowie is played. Personal favourite the 'alternative room' in Poptastic does exactly as it's title suggests on Tuesdays and Saturdays. For those of you who enjoy a big club experience with variety, go to club night Bollox at Legends every 3rd Friday of the month, they still enjoy quality pop music but rest assured, this one does not disappoint.
